The 2014 College Football Performance Awards Linebacker Trophy Watch List added senior outside linebacker Alani Fua to the exclusive list on Thursday, July 2.

Linebacker Alani Fua returns an interception 51 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter versus Georgia Tech last season. Fua recorded 63 tackles in 13 games for the Cougars in 2013.

The CFPA names 40 of the best linebackers in the country to compete for the trophy. Linebacker Kyle Van Noy earned the 2012 CFPA Linebacker Trophy as well as the CFPA Defensive Player of the Year title that same season.

Having already been named to the Phil Steele Preseason All-Independent First Team earlier this year, the news should come as no surprise.

Last year Fua played in all 13 games while recording 63 total tackles, three sacks and two interceptions, one resulting in an interception returned 51 yards for a touchdown against Georgia Tech.

“Congratulations to Alani Fua on earning a spot on the 2014 CFPA Watch List,” said CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith. “Fua has the potential to become the third CFPA winner at BYU.”

The other third player is Dennis Pitta, who earned the 2009 CFPA Elite Tight End Trophy.
