A three-minute insight to 3D printing

The science reference desk at the Harold B. Lee Library has offered 3D printing services for the public on its MakerBot Replicator 2 since August 2013.

The 3D printer, of which there are several on campus, converts a roll of plastic cord into a functional object.

Susie Quick, a science reference desk worker, said the department has received approval for a new 3D printer, which they expect to have available for students in May.

“We’re getting a big brother to (the current) printer,” Quick said. “The one they’ve been looking at is the MakerBot Z18.”
