MoTab to present complete Handel’s Messiah Easter weekend

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir will perform Handel’s “Messiah” in an unusual Easter weekend performance, joined by Mack Wilberg and the Orchestra at Temple Square, though tickets are long gone.

Tickets sold out within seven and a half minutes on March 11. There may be standby seating on the days of the performances, which are Friday, April 18, and Saturday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m., but there are no plans to broadcast the performances. However, the choir and orchestra will release Mack Wilberg’s arrangement of “Messiah” in February 2015.

The full choir and orchestra haven’t performed for the temple square Easter concert in ten years, according to a press release.

The beloved oratorio is usually performed at Christmastime but did in fact debut around Easter in 1742 in Dublin.

It is “perhaps the first time ever that (the) Choir has publicly performed Messiah in its entirety,” according to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir blog.
