New scary storytelling contest promises to scare listeners before Halloween

The Timpanogos Storytelling Festival and Orem Public Library will host the first annual Hauntings Contest Monday, Oct. 28.

The event will include nine contest winners who have proven that they know how to scare an audience.

“People are calling for more scary stories, especially at this time of year,” April Johnson, director of the Hauntings contest, said in a press release. “They want to be scared enough to be glad to have someone walk them to their car at the end of the evening.”

The idea for the Hauntings Contest comes from the Shivers in the Night segment at the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. The Shivers in the Night program has gathered a following of people who want more; this Hauntings Contest hopes to give them the spine-tingling adrenaline fix they crave, especially around Halloween.

The nine contests will be judged by a panel including President of the Utah Storytelling Guild Karl Behling and TSI board member Wendy Gourley, among others, for the chance to win tickets to the 2014 Timpanogos Story Conference.

The event is free and will take place in the Orem Public Library storytelling wing at 7 p.m. The Orem Public Library is located at 58 North State Street in Orem.
