General Conference (Sunday afternoon): Elder Randall K. Bennett

Elder Randall K. Bennett taught that individuals indirectly choose their consequences when they choose their actions.

He shared a story of choosing to swim in water even know though he knew it was dangerous.

“I remember rationalizing: ‘I’m a strong swimmer. Swimming will be great exercise. I’ll be safe in the shallow water,’ ” Elder Bennett said.

The water caught him in the current and began to pull him away from shore, exhausting his energy. Fortunately, a lifeguard who had been watching him came to his rescue.

“He knew the current would capture me, and he knew where it would take me,” Elder Bennett said. “Without his help I never could have made it back to my family.”

Elder Bennett said our decisions have eternal consequences.

“In what we choose to think about, feel, and do, are you and I choosing eternal life?” Elder Bennett asked.

He said church leaders seek to warn us of the dangers of the world.

“My dear brothers and sisters, your eternal destiny will not be the result of chance, but of choice,” Elder Bennett said. “It is never too late to begin to choose eternal life.”
