RSL searching for ultimate fan

Real Salt Lake has teamed up with sponsor JetBlue Airlines in the hunt for the ultimate fan. The “Fan for Life” contest was put in place to reward the most devoted fan for their ongoing support.

Fans must submit a video no longer than three minutes demonstrating why they deserve the title “Fan for Life”. The winner will receive two lower bowl season tickets for the 2012-14 seasons, as well as two round-trip airline tickets to any JetBlue destination in the United States. Fans must submit their entries by Sept. 30,  and the winner will be revealed during halftime on Fan Appreciation Night on Oct. 22 when RSL will take on the Portland Timbers. Entries can be mailed or directly turned into the RSL front office for consideration.

This is the first time RSL has hosted a contest of this magnitude strictly to appreciate their fans’ continuous dedication. Keane Horner, head of RSL’s Sponsorship Department, said the club “wanted to do something unique for their loyal fans.”

The contest is expected to be competitive due to the large and faithful fan base. Horner said they are averaging 16,500 people per home game, and the number of season ticket holders continues to grow.

One of these dedicated fans, Trey Maxwell, a Sandy local, has been a season ticket holder along with the members of his family since 2004 when the team was founded.

“I have always been a sports fan and my whole family really loves soccer,” Maxwell said, “so it was natural for us to become big-time Real fans.”

Since there are thousands of devoted fans, Horner said he “hopes one fan will stand out above the rest.”

However, fans like Maxwell and his family may make the winner of this contest a difficult decision.

“I have heard about the ‘Fan for Life’ contest … and I know I am the ultimate fan,” Maxwell said.

Many fans like Maxwell have the same opinions of themselves and have already sent in their submissions.

“We have received a few good submissions already,” Horner said, “but we know we will receive tons of quality entries.”

The top five entries will be decided by the RSL organization, and then the winner will be determined by JetBlue Airlines.

Horner said he believes this will be something new and exciting for all RSL fans to get involved with.

“We expect it to be a fun and rewarding competition,” Horner said.
