Despite being injured, the BYU women’s diving team performed well over the weekend in Austin, Texas, as they competed against some of the best diving programs in the country.

The Cougars placed two divers in Friday’s final, finishing ahead of stiff competition from University of Houston and in-conference rival University of Wyoming. Along with Houston and Wyoming, BYU also competed against top ranked teams including No. 3 Stanford, No. 4 Arizona, No. 12 SMU, No. 16 Texas, No. 17 Arizona State and No. 19 Wisconsin.

“There was great competition,” head coach Keith Russell said. “Overall we did a good job.”

Sophomores Ava Jackman and Tawni Jones were not intimidated by the nation’s best divers. Jackman placed fifth in the finals, scoring 255.30 in the 1-meter event while Jones placed seventh, scoring 252.55.

The Cougars were also impressive in the 3-meter event. Senior Angela Nelson finished in tenth place followed by Jones’ thirteenth place finish and Jackman’s fifteenth place finish.

With the fall season behind them, the Cougar divers will now prepare for their regular season which will begin January 10, 2008 when they host TCU.
