Ben Saylor signed as a free agent with the New York Mets last week and is currently playing for its Gulf Coast League rookie team in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Saylor, an outfielder who finished his eligibility at BYU last spring, got his first start this week and hit his first home run on Tuesday. Saylor finished ninth in the final NCAA statistics in home runs, 18th in slugging percentage and 58th in runs batted in.

“We are glad Ben got an opportunity to play at a higher level,” said BYU Coach Vance Law. “We were surprised he didn’t get drafted, but are glad he can now show what he can do.”

Law also reports former BYU shortstop Marcos Villezcas was just called up from the Seattle Mariners’ rookie team in Peoria, Ariz., to the San Antonio Missions, the AA affiliate in Texas.

“Marcos is very polished and steady, that is what the teams at that level are looking for right now,” said Law.
