The Mountain West Conference released its projected football television schedule for the 2005 season last Thursday. The schedule currently features a minimum of 28 national or regional televised games. The conference expects to add several more telecasts in the coming months and will release a full television schedule at its annual football media day July 18 in San Diego.

BYU will be featured twice on national television ? against Boston College on Sept. 3 and against Notre Dame on Oct. 22. The Cougars will play the Eagles at 1:30 p.m. on ABC in a regional telecast, while BYU and the Fighting Irish will battle at 11:30 a.m. on NBC.

The MWC will figure prominently in the inaugural season of Division I-A college football on College Sports Television (CSTV). Two games will feature match-ups against Conference USA opponents, and Air Force will face Navy in the annual service academy showdown. ESPN/ESPN2 are currently scheduled to air 10 games involving Mountain West Conference teams in 2005, while ABC will broadcast five contests. There are also eight syndicated ?Mountain West Game of the Week? telecasts scheduled on ESPN Regional Television.

    MEN’S GOLF

BYU?s top golfer Oscar Alvarez was named to the PING All-American Second Team after completing a stellar junior season where he led BYU to a fourth-place NCAA finish.

Alvarez ended the season with a seventh-place individual finish at the national championships and helped BYU to its best NCAA finish since 1986. Alvarez is BYU?s first second-team or first-team All-American since Andy Miller in 2000. He was one of 10 individuals named to the PING All-American second team.

?Oscar is very deserving of this honor,? BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. ?He has been a very big part of what this team accomplished this year. He?s an outstanding golfer and deserves to be mentioned among the best.?

    BASEBALL

Third baseman Brandon Taylor of Brigham Young was the District VIII Player of the Year as named by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

Earlier last week, Taylor was also named to the College Baseball Foundation Honors Team. Three times during the season he was named to the CBF National Honor Roll.

The junior has some of the best power numbers in the country as the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year. He hit .356 with BYU team highs of 20 home runs, 83 RBI, 85 hits and 170 total bases as the Cougars’ first All-America choice since Dave Jensen in 2002.

    NFL EUROPE

Former BYU offensive tackle Ben Archibald helped lead the Amsterdam Admirals to a 27-21 victory over the Berlin Thunder in NFL Europe?s World Bowl XIII on Saturday in D?sseldorf, Germany.

Archibald, who was allocated to the Admirals by the New Orleans Saints, was the starting right tackle for Amsterdam. The Seaside, Ore., native was part of an offensive line that provided protection for the game?s MVP, quarterback Kurt Kittner. Kittner was 15-of-28 for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Behind Archibald, the Admirals also racked up 110 yards rushing.

Former quarterback Bret Engemann was also a participant in World Bowl XIII. Engemann, an allocation from the Oakland Raiders, is a backup quarterback for Berlin.
