Letter to the editor: BYUSA elections not that important

    51

    Dear Editor:

I feel BYUSA elections are not as important as we are being led to think they are.

BYU is not a democracy, it is a theocracy. The president of BYU is a member of the First Quorum of Seventy, and the president of the Board of Trustees is the Prophet. This is not to say that I am not grateful to be led by men of God. It is wonderful to be guided by them. However, the traditional role of a student body president is to “go to the mat” with the administration over student issues. This will never happen at BYU because when we sustain our leaders in General Conference, we sustain President Bateman and President Hinckley in their roles as leaders at BYU. How does one tell a General Authority that one does not agree with how he is fulfilling his calling? You don’t. It’s an absurd thought. The suggestions that BYUSA might make to the administration are just that — suggestions.

People should vote in BYUSA elections understanding that they are voting for the head of a student service organization. BYUSA is not BYU student government — it can’t be. BYUSA is just another club. The elections are really not that important.
