Elder L. Tom Perry of the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will speak tonight at Women’s Conference and at a CES fireside on Sunday.

Women’s Conference will be held today and tomorrow from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Elder Perry will speak at 6 tonight in the Marriott Center and Sunday at 7 p.m. in the Marriott Center.

    The fireside will be re-broadcast May 9 at 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. on KBYU-TV (channel 11) and at 8 p.m. on KBYU-FM (89.1).

Elder Perry will speak on faithfulness and diligence at Thursday’s Women’s Conference.

He will give a talk entitled, “Give Heed Unto the Word of the Lord,” at the fireside Sunday.

Elder Perry was ordained an apostle on April 11, 1974, at the age of 51. Prior to being ordained an apostle he served as an Assistant to The Twelve since 1972.

He served a mission in the Northern States in 1942. Following his mission he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served for two years.

Other Church positions that Elder Perry has held include being a bishopric member in Lewiston, Idaho; a counselor in a stake presidency in Sacramento, Calif; high councilor in the New York Stake; and president of the Boston Stake.

Carri Jenkins, Director of Media Communications at BYU, said although there are fewer students because it is spring semester, she thinks students will take advantage of the chance to listen to a member of The Twelve.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to hear from a General Authority,” she said.

Since CES firesides are broadcast throughout the nation, even students who have left for the Spring are able to listen to Elder Perry’s talk, Jenkins said.

A native of Logan, Elder Perry earned his bachelor’s degree in finance in 1949 from Utah State University and also did graduate work there.

He spent his professional career in the retail business, serving as vice president and treasurer in companies in Idaho, California, New York and Massachusetts.

Elder Perry married Virginia Lee in 1947. They are the parents of two daughters and a son. Mrs. Perry passed away in 1974 and in 1976 Elder Perry married Barbara Taylor Dayton.
